about this whole foster/adopt, going through the state, DHR stuff is this one question that keeps popping up:<br />
Imagine that the child welfare worker is at your door with the child or children you are planning to foster/adopt. Pleas describe the child or children, for example: physical appearance, family background, personality, and school ability.<br />
<br />
I’ll leave you with that. I could rant and rave all day about this, but I’d like to leave that to ya’ll. What are your thoughts?Meghanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06309795711492282592noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4137461249493794303.post-76343478095940019952012-09-10T11:48:00.000-05:002012-09-10T11:50:28.883-05:00What's Going on This WeekWow. Usually you meet for one night a week for 3 hours.</p> <p>In these three hours you will learn all sorts of things. At times you will want to quit, at times it’s really hard to hear what they have to say. Sometimes you find out things about yourself you didn’t want to know. Or maybe you needed to know, but it hurt to hear. The situations are all real that they discuss with you. You will feel sick to your stomach. You get really tired, and hungry, and even bored at times. Just remember: it’s all about the kids. Stick in there. If you need encouragement call a friend that has gone through the program. Call me. Oh and you and your husband BOTH have to attend. It’s something your WHOLE family has to support and give 110% to. You are allow to miss two total classes, but will have to make them up later.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>2.</strong>You have to pass two homestudies. We haven’t had ours yet, but hopefully will in a month or so. We do have the sheet they go by during the homestudy. So far…we are FAILING! You have to buy a $50 fire extinguisher. They will tell you which one, but it HAS to be 5 or more pounds. We ordered one off Amazon, it said it was 7lbs, opened the box and it was only 4. You can NOT ship fire extinguishers back! Just go to Lowes. Another thing that I find difficult about the homestudy is the fact that you have to lock everything up. When I say everything, I mean EVERY-thing! Anything that has a warning label on the bottle. Items such as soap, shampoo, razors, deodorant, toothpaste, dish soap, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, cosmetics, finger nail polish, hair spray, makeup, cremes, lotions, etc. ect. ect. No joke. What a perfect time to go green. I’m using up my harsh cleaners with chemicals and switching to: baking soda, vinegar, and homemade soaps, etc. It has to be locked with a KEY! We are lucky. We have a linen closet in our bathroom. We have old door knobs and skeleton key locks on all our doors, but the closets. We bought something similar to the picture below, it also comes with knobs for both sides. If you can come up with a NON-tacky idea, please share.</p> <p><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31b7T7pXKGL._SL500_SS500_.jpg" width="351" height="351"></p> <p><strong>3.</strong> You need to make a list of items the children might need when they come into your home. From everything I’ve heard they pretty much come with a garbage sack carrying their belongings. Which could include a blanket, maybe some clothes, a toy, etc. Usually they have on a diaper and maybe a shirt if your lucky. There’s one other thing I should mention that they bring with them…lice, and bugs, and filth. Not all of them. I’m sure if you pick your baby up at the hospital the nurses will have him all cleaned up. That would be the ideal situation. Everyone wants a baby. Right? So, I’ve started compiling a list of things a toddler or baby might need when they get to our home (we are only fostering ages 3 and under, just in case we will get a chance to adopt). <<Jeff and I feel we are not prepared to take on older children this time in our lives. When a child gets past a certain age they are pretty set in their ways and these children have been through some horrendous stuff. It will be easier to mold them and teach them if they are younger. Not that we want to change them at all, but they can have serious issues from the neglect and abuse. A younger child will usually adapt better. Maybe when we raise a few kids and start to figure this parenting thing out we will open our homes to older kids. If you have any more questions about this you can email me. Ok, here is the list:</p> <p>I know I’ve missed some things and would <u>LOVE</u> your input. This is what I’ve got so far…</p> <ul> <ul> <li> <div align="left">bottles, sippy cups</div></li> <li> <div align="left">formula</div></li> <li> <div align="left">jars of baby food (I plan on making my own, so we can have fresh fruit and veggies ready)</div></li> <li> <div align="left">bibs</div></li> <li> <div align="left">highchair, booster seats</div></li> <li> <div align="left">car seat for 5lbs to 40lbs</div></li> <li> <div align="left">pjs/play clothes for appropriate age range newborn-3T</div></li> <li> <div align="left">lots of cloth diapers and covers</div></li> <li> <div align="left">homemade wipes</div></li> <li> <div align="left">blankets</div></li> <li> <div align="left">toddler beds/cribs</div></li> <li> <div align="left">make sure outlets are covered and cabinets locked</div></li> <li> <div align="left">baby socks and shoes (harder to know what sizes)</div></li> <li> <div align="left">RID for lice (you need the kit with the comb, and the spray for their stuff)</div></li> <li> <div align="left">detergent for baby clothes</div></li> <li> <div align="left">shampoo, soap</div></li> <li> <div align="left">baby toothpaste and baby toothbrushes</div></li></ul></ul> <p align="left"><strong>4</strong>. There are far more important things that you need to prepare. Your mind, your attitude, your relationships, etc. You need to know that when you foster it is only temporary. These children have birth families. Maybe they are going through hard times. Maybe they really love their kids and want to get them back home (this is not always the case). You have to go into it with your whole heart, but you still have to realize that more times than not, you will be giving these children back to their birth families! This obviously will be the hardest part. Does this mean you shouldn’t foster, because it will hurt? Absolutely not. Am I scared. Absolutely. Will I get attached? I wouldn’t be human if I didn’t. These babies might not have ever experienced love in their <u>whole</u> lives. You have to show them unconditional love. You have to give them everything you got. They will know if you are holding back yourself from them. Let them have your heart. They will carry it with them for their entire life. </p> <p align="left">Love unconditionally (affection without any limitations). These are God’s children and they deserve it.</p> <p align="left">So please hang around while we go on this journey. I hope one day there will be so many people opening up their homes to these orphans that we will have more homes than orphans! If you are starting your foster or adoption journey, please stay strong. The children need you and they are definitely worth the wait!</p> Meghanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06309795711492282592noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4137461249493794303.post-88817709049909042682012-09-06T22:47:00.002-05:002012-09-07T07:41:28.946-05:00Just a Little TasteHi Blog-World! Lately I've gotten a lot of complaints about my lack of posts. I truly am sorry. When I started blogging I was staying home working on the house and had more time to blog. Since August of last year I started working full-time, to help afford all this "reno" work, and have neglected you all. Most all of the work we have been doing around here has been necessary but not pretty, know what I mean? Well, the latest BIG project was getting the attic insulated with blow-in insulation. We went with the wool/fiberglass mix, (it's fluffy & pink) and we highly recommend it! We found out that the recycled cardboard insulation (we originally planned to have blown in) soaks up moisture, thus gets moldy, thus needs to be replaced in 6 years! Yikes! So we switched and are so happy. Hopefully this will never need to be replaced. I can tell you that the house is SO much cooler since we did this. I highly recommend everyone to check their attic and see if it is properly insulated. I'm told it will save money on your electrical bill too, we haven't gotten one since we've insulated. It would greatly be appreciated over here, since our utility bill has been $400 in the winter! <br />
Okay, sorry to bore you with all that stuff. See, I told you there has been nothing around here to blog about! Well, I take that back, we are about to get <i>personal! </i>As a lot of you know Jeff and I have been married for almost 8 years. We have been actively TTC (trying to conceive) for 4 1/2 years. Wow. Yeah, I know! I cannot believe it's been that long, then again, I can. So, for over half our marriage we have had this "stress" and when I say "stress" I don't even know where to start with how this affects your marriage, your self-esteem, your self-worth, your EVERYthing! It hurts, it's so painful. Unless you've gone through this or been close to someone who has, let me take that back, UNLESS YOU'VE GONE THROUGH THIS PERSONALLY, you will never understand. Don't try to! We don't expect you to. No, there's not some club of angry, most likely to never conceive, hate group out there. It's just...when you want to start your family and be a mother, and you don't get a baby you start to see all your friends around you becoming mothers, and there is a little resentment. It's mostly like: "I really hope you appreciate what you have" feelings going on. I want nothing more than my friends to be happy and have large families, but please NEVER say to your friend TTC, "you don't understand, your not a mother", or stupid phrases like, " well Billy just has to look at me and I pop out another one"! Honestly its best that you don't say anything at all if you can't think about your words before you let them out. I REALLY wasn't expecting to vent like that. Really, I'm sorry. One more thing, it's no one's FAULT. Please don't ask your friend who is TTC, well, what's wrong? Is it YOU or HIM! For real??? What are you possibly going to gain from this knowledge? AND if I wanted you to know I'd offer that bit of information on my own, when I'm ready. Thank you. What does it matter anyways? We are a family, a team, we are in this together. It is the fault of NO ONE. There. I'm done. I promise. <br />
I said all that to lead into what's going on now. I'll admit I am selfish. I want a biological baby, who doesn't? To be able to look at your little one and say she has your husband’s nose and your eyes. To know you, your husband, and God created this being; and she is perfect and a witness to the love you and your husband share. I mean, who wouldn't want that? After years of being selfish and having a BIG ole' pity party, and I do mean BIG. I got over myself. I DON'T HAVE TO GIVE BIRTH TO BE A MOM! Neither do you. That's not all being a mother is about. Since, probably about January of this year we turned our priorities toward adoption. Wow, what a breath of fresh air! It feels SO good. We've been through a lot on this short journey already. A lot of stress and frustration, even disappointment. Anyone who goes through an adoption will tell you these things, BUT what do they always say? It's ALWAYS worth it in the end. I'm ready for the end already… where are you? Oh did I mention the part about patience? Whether you are TTC or trying to adopt, PATIENCE is key. If you don't have it, you will learn quickly that you need it. <br />
*UPDATE* Jeff and I have one more DHR foster/adopt class!* Yippee! Now that doesn't mean we are done. We still have a CPR class and 2 homestudies. Things are moving along with the house and hopefully I will blog my way through the process. If I get caught up with other “stuff”, I'll apologize now. Our lives could be changing in a matter of months! All prayers are appreciated! <br />
We are working on doing a girls room and a boys room. Right now the girls room is equipped with two toddler beds and the boys room has a full-size bed. We are only fostering children 3 and under, so I'm thinking they will both girl/boy, girl/girl, be in the girl room. Don't freak out it's not going to have pink walls! We are trying to keep both the rooms pretty gender neutral. It's not like we are getting a sonogram and 9 months to prepare, so we are doing the best we can. I'm going to give you a little sneak peak of things I've been working on in each room. First the girl room: <br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSvhKjgzUUoLwkKrypu0NPgSgcRQGF_SQODvOY-dOPjf7xbbfzM4q7YOWD13rPI5iuOiWVYFqPJ-uXmG8UBoN7fB-lQGN4CtmhkzMkt1ngM2O5j5RQTF8sUAFbUgTkVZT_SBg4-OkZSc0/s1600/Kennedy's+008.jpg"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSvhKjgzUUoLwkKrypu0NPgSgcRQGF_SQODvOY-dOPjf7xbbfzM4q7YOWD13rPI5iuOiWVYFqPJ-uXmG8UBoN7fB-lQGN4CtmhkzMkt1ngM2O5j5RQTF8sUAFbUgTkVZT_SBg4-OkZSc0/s640/Kennedy's+008.jpg" style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="426" /></a> <br />
I cut up old vintage sheets and crocheted them with an extra large hook to make this shabby little rug for the "girl" room. <br />
Next you can kinda get a "feel" for the boy room by this little stool I re-did. <br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-xkNSNnWyWnU/UEluHldCgXI/AAAAAAAABEc/teWAmxDzO6M/s1600-h/Boy%252520room%252520013%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Boy room 013" border="0" height="370" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-uQLDalcIHXw/UEluIVgS-7I/AAAAAAAABEk/WR9wzmXz8YE/Boy%252520room%252520013_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Boy room 013" width="516" /></a><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-5y5QyiO1M5c/UEluKD1472I/AAAAAAAABEs/iQZ13PDkh60/s1600-h/Boy%252520room%252520016%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Boy room 016" border="0" height="815" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-ZOMA19N0PBA/UEluLc9Y3qI/AAAAAAAABE0/BfJGFwlx44U/Boy%252520room%252520016_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Boy room 016" width="512" /></a><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-8_2SY_80AXE/UEluMsHROiI/AAAAAAAABE8/Av43u246bYI/s1600-h/Boy%252520room%252520012%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Boy room 012" border="0" height="632" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNjSNcpX86fyoqtoIcjxmEdKQGfSgNd5kl3cn8T0lzWg9chS9GqU_xnGBWERECdQWNG4LQNxNF6PzLt5m9labMqal5dc2oLI_i8wXNOnXMwmv9UYIFQooa3_91ntRX9IcWAvh9iAlnIj8/?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Boy room 012" width="405" /></a><br />
I want the colors to be bright and modern (the opposite of the girl room, which will be shabby and retro). Lots of navy and white with pops of really bright green. I’m hoping to refinish an antique headboard with this same color green and make it really distressed. What do you think?<br />
Thanks for listening!<br />

A year ago, this month we moved to our new home. I can’t believe it’s already been a year. We have done so much in the living room, but have yet to finish. The ceiling has new sheetrock and a brocade texture. We closed in the closet and opened it up into the master bedroom. We’ve stained the wood floors, and painted the walls. We hung my art, and installed surround sound. We still have to put in a light fixture and a ceiling fan, replace the front door, buy a leather sectional, and buy a rug. Our latest project included installing a track system and hanging the curtains. <br />
Our living room is extra long, because what used to be a screened in front porch was closed in and made into a small sunroom attached to our living room. You really can’t tell it was an add on, it just looks like part of the living room. Well, it is pretty much two walls of windows, and my favorite little spot in the house. I plan on turning it into a his/hers area. Jeff already has claimed part of the space with his drums and guitar set up, but on the right side, I’m making a reading nook. I’m in love with a chaise from Ikea, that I plan to put over there on top of my shag rug. Then I’ll add a few floor pillows, a side table, and a lamp.<br />
Here is Jeff reading the directions on how to put together the track system from Ikea.<br />

My friend and I made the curtains. I used three different types of fabric and made panels by cutting them all the same size and using a serger on the edges.<br />
Here is how it turned out:<br />

The sheer fabric was on clearance at Wal-Mart for $1 a yard.<br />
I love it! Now we can watch movies during the day with no glare on the t.v.<br />
Even though the track system took a while to put up, we both felt it was well designed and very sturdy. <br />

I totally stole this idea off another blog. I loved it so much, I wanted to share it with you. In case you didn’t read the link on my facebook page for the other blog, I will show you how easy it is to add some spooktacular fun to your front yard for Halloween! <br />
I’m not even going to show you step by step instructions on this one because it will insult your intelligence. Here’s what you need:<br />
<ol>
<li>Old Christmas ball ornaments. They can be as big or as small as you want, mine were small.</li>
<li>Squares of white fabric (you can cut an old sheet).</li>
<li>Halloween ribbon or yarn.</li>
<li>Fishing line.</li>
<li>If you choose to add a face, you will need a fabric marker and googly eyes.</li>
</ol>
<br />
All you do is cut a tiny slit in the middle of the white fabric to push the top of your ornament through. Next you tie a ribbon under the ball. If you want a face you can hot glue your eyes and then then add a mouth. Lastly, you add fishing line and hang from a tree or your porch.<br />
This project would be a fun one to do with your kids, nieces, or nephews. <br />
I made 10, because that is all the fabric I had. I would like about 5 more. We have 4 dogwood trees in the front yard and that is where I hung mine.<br />

<br />
Also, here is our front porch all decorated for the fall:<br />
<div align="center">
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-uSW16Z4Y97E/TpI0wb84y-I/AAAAAAAAA9s/C7jsehJrYJI/s1600-h/ghosts%252520001%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img alt="ghosts 001" border="0" height="372" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-nHVq7wyb9Qw/TpI0xc834ZI/AAAAAAAAA9w/NHfh9OsKBm0/ghosts%252520001_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="ghosts 001" width="528" /></a></div>
We haven’t carved our punkins yet. I don’t own any Halloween decorations, so it’s pretty simple. I’m slowly making and gathering Halloween stuff, so I can keep it for the years to come. I think we might hang some lights on the porch to make it a little more fun. We still haven’t gotten a new door, because I’ve been working so much. <br />
I also made this little rug for our front door:<br />
<div align="center">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj26ED8jQHwf8r3kM7bmMjUjvM2rlDPAfFFF3Cnme8G7vbQxZh7baAGNALpwhTkgRdNvpRgUsue5DoWLMbxV6_N1QESnRNn7F5nMsXJeoLMtQ0uVY_4g2uXgto9tXKlEJITWo1y8Dppq1s/s1600-h/ghosts%252520005%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="ghosts 005" border="0" height="161" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-cs_SAvESYu8/TpI01Mwlp9I/AAAAAAAAA94/PQwL4YzNKD4/ghosts%252520005_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="ghosts 005" width="240" /></a></div>
I bought the rug for $7 at Wal-Mart and then made a stencil by printing a font that I liked on regular paper and then cutting it out with sharp scissors. I taped it down and then spray painted in the cut out. I had some over spray from the wind and so I sprayed carpet cleaner and tried to scrub it out. That’s why there is a white semi-circle. I think it’s mostly left over paper towel. lol Real professional, I know. It’s just something you wipe your feet on, so it doesn’t really bother me. Plus, I’m not a perfectionist by any means.<br />
<br />
Cheers!Meghanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06309795711492282592noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4137461249493794303.post-82870375903048028352011-10-02T16:19:00.003-05:002011-10-03T16:51:04.257-05:00Make Your own Halloween Wreath<p> </p> <p align="center"><span>Happy October!</span></p> <p>I made my first, ever wreath. I love it! October is probably one of my favorite months out of the year. I’ve always loved the cool crisp air, the autumn smells, and Halloween is probably my favorite holiday. When else can you put on crazy clothes and run around asking complete strangers for candy, “Come On”! (Sorry about that. Kinda addicted to Arrested Development. It’s hard not to quote the Bluth family). </p> <p>Okay, so if you want a quick and easy Halloween wreath, this one probably isn’t for you, but it is OH so cute. I’ve been away for quite a while (I actually have a job now) so I figured I owed you one. </p> <p>First things first, you might want to take a look at the finished product to see if you even want to make it. My command hook said to wait an hour, so it’s not yet hanging.</p> <p align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfveoZmUXLPE588pP7jUedMQQ5chZkyQWAe_uDPB8IXvc2pfRYeyaEtAYrwmlDKASu08SEDbVJHR1lJawZzT-2SJMQWda0ZV_Klw8VT3TzxbsoCnlrKE8ooGF_2F8DpLZ1RIPol53RjmM/s1600-h/wreath%252520082%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wreath 082" border="0" alt="wreath 082" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-IBdQn5e26dM/TojVB4MOlEI/AAAAAAAAA64/iLn2kNV15vs/wreath%252520082_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="353" height="553" /></a></p> <p>Step 1: Buy a round foam or straw wreath form.</p> <p>Step 2: Buy yarn in your favorite Halloween color.</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-MFyUVGpPsxbeZUS3gL9brd_MgyL1zX0r-bLbv_vftVaWX24T2jzy3diMntpMDPWx1ZQnXOyKtOToZB8Yj2cWQjEAn_djlKXoXsxc2NZIOGPzz-_F4yVgKhMbgkiNh55ie7MDVh2csrs/s1600-h/wreath%252520045%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wreath 045" border="0" alt="wreath 045" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-2GOONwPPaNk/TojVDvQlX0I/AAAAAAAAA7A/Cgb2qdfSQ3E/wreath%252520045_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="442" height="311" /></a></p> <p>Step 3: Start wrapping, I would try to get all the straw covered, but don’t waste your time or yarn making it perfect, like I did. I ran out, so had to improvise with another color. When you get to the start of your wreath, just thread your yarn on a fat eyed needle and loop it under some of the yarn and tie it off. Cut the tail. Be warned this takes a LONG time. hours. Sit back and watch a few episodes of Arrested Development, or Community. Ahhhh…good shows.</p> <p>Step 4: Start making your garnishes, I don’t know why I just called them that. Better names aren’t coming to me. The stuff to make your wreath pretty. How about flowers?</p> <p>Step 5: Buy fabric and make roses. If you don’t know how to do this, just google, fabric rosettes or something. This post is already going to be too long to teach you this. Sorry. </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-9ICP-8VZHQI/TojVEn6cW7I/AAAAAAAAA7E/wkBYGLyv3eA/s1600-h/wreath%252520071%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wreath 071" border="0" alt="wreath 071" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK-gaT5DhgBO3Se5bEfzR1ZKwXjaocAV40p7o2wGAXxfeGP2bKc7MBBxhCTDGFD36CcapcKxsdpe3yfoig6JY9-Mfzu90RzU7cd7ofp9PL1g-hHcFL7ZWBsBU986Go4kWUg06Q7u-2uJ8/?imgmax=800" width="240" height="161" /></a></p> <p>Step 6: Oh wait I forgot to tell you everything you need to buy for this project. I will do this now. You’re a smart cookie, just move this up to step one (in your head).</p> <p> </p> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMnsOQsPK8N0marMv3VYG0vdFUa_ENMyfRXd6_r4323tbP8bnbyPROlKUg246VqSzCZqCqPz-cnHPJwLm9l9AAX4QnIwSPVYOyawfIa54RRdhPXtZt8WGXB7LV15Krv6mWYCLpFgUmfxE/s1600-h/wreath%252520067%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wreath 067" border="0" alt="wreath 067" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-CXVipZGO5Hw/TojVGud9CJI/AAAAAAAAA7Q/jtq_z9q3Euo/wreath%252520067_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="490" height="345" /></a> <p>I didn’t use the felt, but you can make felt flowers or whatever with it. I bought sheer purple ribbon with wire, black feathers (out of Hobby Lobby’s floral dept. 50 cents a piece), fabric of your choice, chip board letters (you can spell out whatever you want, and craft paint in your color choice (not pictured).</p> <p>Step 7: Go ahead and paint your chip board so it can be drying.</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijKyu5Vdec6A12GPH2bx7cH9oyfIbgAtoqCYgFIXSDAhqloycyQSSMdyu82qP4Rj8U7qRJUg93ce9sfhi-8OCjd7f4zxLOnZi84pbyo5UflzkhrXOn-K5IkT7IXyftnpFz8xNdjRmnFLg/s1600-h/wreath%252520079%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wreath 079" border="0" alt="wreath 079" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-KOzA4Pm2uLE/TojVH74vOrI/AAAAAAAAA7Y/Syvxvto0L38/wreath%252520079_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="240" height="161" /></a></p> <p>Step 8: I made my spider. Really none of this has an order, incase you couldn’t tell. If you don’t know how to crochet or knit you can skip this step and just buy a plastic spider from a dollar store. I just knitted a circle, stuffed it with two cotton balls, tied it up. Here is how I made the legs. Just click to enlarge pics if you need to.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-jOrcC8h0zL4/TojVIwZ6hfI/AAAAAAAAA7c/SiriL_n4kqQ/s1600-h/wreath%252520056%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wreath 056" border="0" alt="wreath 056" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1tGbqp8iknrZZFlyVbhGfeUpcqK2CK4Z8sb6rCZqJ-VGqYu_uxcE7Na6KhEz7XG09iv0VzrJ3s5T3vyDaJzRSExsxK6MHfA81kYHTO0pbrje-9_6wA_dHU8B8SrdU_vuaiV39SZITCdk/?imgmax=800" width="240" height="161" /></a><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-rm8b7haPgqc/TojVJggx1uI/AAAAAAAAA7k/r5AE8OV-86Q/s1600-h/wreath%252520052%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wreath 052" border="0" alt="wreath 052" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuGlLeU601pQAUrb9FYKwxGjOgsWcagM3Nv8Ty73BvARVPxneKRyDFYrqIhNM4dWuPKO6k0Hou3CVR1jQMvrsQ6fLGhsWPxxig0mgV328EsGW4Gpmiwj1DkvkQd7cV4hLwRZiRL0TXEhM/?imgmax=800" width="161" height="240" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjobuRimmZS2HZsoFkCzbvkBN2gtF_uwlbXQQdpE5VlfzY1o8YQ5lAGxOMTOs6y8PC7UlB7MnKOsklsPgyb-OgelQS6v9qrwS2EeSNJoRM0TXizish_73-up2MCdoRntNojXnmoq7d2ujc/s1600-h/wreath%252520053%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wreath 053" border="0" alt="wreath 053" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-G3SujjzU1uBtzup3W6Q7Y6GgbeZQAA5V2I0gmYjnzg0ohY6MBOPUzvIyZCaVaa6r7cRNwiE6YwpUhzzdEiRi3ynK8M8ZlNcZGkCk0BcKLV0RR4VuUHYY8dcgi2HIVjzci4GhtK6HRgI/?imgmax=800" width="240" height="161" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh__zT0-XDjXYjV3guy_3Rle6bUskafrvUppHpfsSCtGx49u6g64TDeC5BKGGpAzuCQ_Lf0kQrYYcAYXknNNlxKf7CWd5G-2K1g6xuXtBnebF2kbv5FQu-tDNozd77lXMB7ToastsduOtI/s1600-h/wreath%252520054%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wreath 054" border="0" alt="wreath 054" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-0iJwvHt0J-c/TojVMsXtgzI/AAAAAAAAA74/MmywLIdpDy4/wreath%252520054_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="240" height="161" /></a><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-E9szBbDHXuY/TojVN6wTb6I/AAAAAAAAA78/YnWaWk0Zzg8/s1600-h/wreath%252520055%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wreath 055" border="0" alt="wreath 055" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj83EtaJ7vgvDQjFX5H-e3RnAbK-bo5dpDui-bRJTW9raVHpaJ5lf7CbfoUvI9zTaVytCu77xtSeatRXLQTULEsAp_xqgTzwlptFWITJGOO8urFbi6Tc_CynBgMbz68p3F_fvn2-VgiP1I/?imgmax=800" width="240" height="161" /></a><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-itcliO-dSQ0/TojVPDqio7I/AAAAAAAAA8E/vgOt_mC3XeA/s1600-h/wreath%252520058%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wreath 058" border="0" alt="wreath 058" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ_bI8tAwH_ayUJhbuc06ZRZI1X-ifNuDPIUD7lODRp01C0JLnga8WapW_3L3nLDpoyZJ0USl8VmcKDjw8OM0xZUc5Y5vlVv31Nvk8ivKaW73WAzZFtfdgXEbG7Rlyeac-q3hHVajoou0/?imgmax=800" width="240" height="161" /></a></p> <p>Pull tight and repeat three more times, until you have eight legs. Also, you can add googly eyes, but I just didn’t have them.</p> <p>Step 9: Make your bow. Just used wire cutters and trim the ends off. The feathers will not stick THROUGH the ribbon, so just adjust the best you can and push them through the yarn and straw.</p> <p>Step 11: Attach your spider. I took a piece of embroidery floss and hot glued him to the back of the wreath.<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-xpuc_nNGmfU/TojVV5ctzuI/AAAAAAAAA8s/JJmOZ_locD4/s1600-h/wreath%252520073%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wreath 073" border="0" alt="wreath 073" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-fgAWMDDbPco/TojVWWz12tI/AAAAAAAAA8w/GY2cwbw467M/wreath%252520073_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="269" height="414" /></a></p> <p>Step 12: Hot glue your flowers.</p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-TGLaSqVOVrM/TojVXGWb7rI/AAAAAAAAA80/UifVoYNv-6s/s1600-h/wreath%252520076%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wreath 076" border="0" alt="wreath 076" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-YZ7w3sCgiiM/TojVXs4qHkI/AAAAAAAAA84/D5EXUp_zwto/wreath%252520076_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="266" height="410" /></a></p> <p>I glued them over the black yarn to hide it some.</p> <p>Step 13: Hot glue your letters, aaaaaaaannnddd then you are done! Finally, right? I’m going to hang mine on my front door by a silver command hook. I’m so happy to have something to make my ugly door pretty! Btw, we should be getting a new door soon. Stay tuned. </p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-uzKiFybR_t4/TojVYf48heI/AAAAAAAAA88/v000l__Ft04/s1600-h/wreath%252520082%25255B13%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wreath 082" border="0" alt="wreath 082" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-nMGN5aPAWOE/TojVY-pkPbI/AAAAAAAAA9A/WnGYEXnaerM/wreath%252520082_thumb%25255B7%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="381" height="597" /></a></p> <p>This project cost around $15 and oodles of time (I got it all done in one night), but it was really fun!</p> <p> </p> <p>Cheers!</p>Meghanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06309795711492282592noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4137461249493794303.post-84566747805433995912011-09-04T19:42:00.002-05:002011-09-04T19:49:20.943-05:00Painted Backsplash<p> </p> <p>There are two things I know about the previous owner of our home. One: she loved to study the bible, two: she loved to cook. This last statement is evident from the some 200 canned goods we found in our kitchen and the grease splattered wood paneling in our kitchen.</p> <p>There is probably about 70 years worth of goo on the paneling. I cleaned it when we moved in and one of the walls I painted. When I primed the wall I noticed immediately that the wall looked yellow. I was using Kilz acrylic primer. After some googling I read to use oil based primer. So, I went out and bought that. </p> <p>When I painted the cabinets I decided to leave the backsplash how it was because I didn’t want to do extra work. Well, It’s been a few months and I don’t think I’m getting my subway tile anytime soon. We have to get countertops first, then we can tile. I couldn’t take it any longer, so this weekend I decided to paint. It took two coats of oil based primer and two coats of paint. It could use another, but since it’s a temporary fix I opted not to. Oh, I decided to paint it the color of the cabinets, so I could kinda get a feel of what it would look like with white subway tile.</p> <p> Here is the before:</p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-eQ54fgm-sf4/TmQahsXjjKI/AAAAAAAAA5o/tOuvIbWYCdk/s1600-h/kitchen%252520037%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="kitchen 037" alt="kitchen 037" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-vXn6s1RZHAg/TmQajBkCgII/AAAAAAAAA5s/llhCTlqg14g/kitchen%252520037_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="361" width="513" /></a></p> <p align="center"> </p> <p align="center"></p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizh9Pr0gNLzXPwkUJhTA5gd4gHQUGx00U18nNjg9dZZHnA_vEiiA9gpD3C-8rJ1LGsiDz6gAWds73fedjAxEj9JrkeGQnHSwAa4qnAtcnbKoEtaZeQloWIiaJ1JBUg9gccszJ58VML4q8/s1600-h/kitchen%252520038%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="kitchen 038" alt="kitchen 038" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-GE0lR2Z90w4/TmQamaz9IJI/AAAAAAAAA50/gj68a4og1Ao/kitchen%252520038_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="656" width="412" /></a> <p>Also notice the nasty brown backsplash behind the stove. Ewww…why did people love brown stuff so much? Brown floors, brown walls, brown vents, brown fans, brown sinks, brown backsplashes. Thank goodness the times have moved past the brown stage. Here is the backsplash now. (remember this will all be tiled and there will be a stainless microwave where the vent is, in the future). </p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-zYPOBZDUxUc/TmQanqRlrFI/AAAAAAAAA54/1h0TdW7WU7E/s1600-h/kitchen%252520045%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="kitchen 045" alt="kitchen 045" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-TeEO-9EtBMI/TmQapwBuSFI/AAAAAAAAA58/xtQ0vdE7nHc/kitchen%252520045_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="652" width="416" /></a></p> <p>I taped off the whole area and used garbage bags to make sure I didn’t get paint anywhere but where I wanted. I primed the area twice and then spray painted it hammered silver. I think it looks much better. Beware of fumes, between the spray paint and the oil primer….I almost died….twice. </p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-jltCBiSYZ20/TmQarFdgMXI/AAAAAAAAA6A/usg7b7svCWw/s1600-h/kitchen%252520042%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="kitchen 042" alt="kitchen 042" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-yFxb5gtZk1E/TmQatN2t7OI/AAAAAAAAA6E/QurUEbHDrmY/kitchen%252520042_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="363" width="502" /></a></p> <p>Sooooo much better, in my opinion. I haven’t added handles to the drawers, because the ones I ordered are way too big. Not sure what I’m going to do yet. Also, we are going to replace the cabinet doors on the top row of cabinets. Underneath I would love to have open storage. I plan on painting the backs of the cabinets a dark blue green so my white dishes will pop. On the left (which is now our pantry) will have all my antique kitchen thingys. We actually have a pantry but we need to put up drywall in there.</p> <p>Here is a close up of some of my favorite things in my kitchen.</p> <p align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1J6ykZKwHCpDezmiP18wpH6mR_nk2MP25peE-hvM15cb5wCbjCE5nQEFBhTky-uZuAtKdHlZdIiWF2tmUiTvRKtLobqnEw_6YgbHl4QOOThR3CWNIdcp5u7HzmW5_i0O2YQMN_GRPLN8/s1600-h/kitchen%252520047%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="kitchen 047" alt="kitchen 047" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7ojmLTffiSmBzrhPGXn-Qzk63IFaju2OaeimoECWBI8Pnt9MvL6jzD0SnCpG-AU4XW1VOx-aWsCqu5dQXBG3qKReee8cw8DUaZ2ceUQTfFXQv2lTzU1RWxbd9178w3Wa7vXEqsor5LnU/?imgmax=800" border="0" height="345" width="490" /></a></p> <p>Vintage canisters. I know this because it had the label on it when I bought it at a thrift store.</p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-XTnRRAyVfqY/TmQa8C8UNrI/AAAAAAAAA6g/F46ku7Biwh4/s1600-h/kitchen%252520062%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="kitchen 062" alt="kitchen 062" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ_H9xNXsu_uWfFTh9s2MgufwOGo6HSaSestNuUfLVu1jhyphenhyphen0zGQlQvXFZoGxtIfVNDCAA0sGfSPKgKWf8dinZkWkjDf-tq0y19zXmnNFD0rFvJgkpZT9pKsqn_k_PpKUuGEiDC0QO8mGg/?imgmax=800" border="0" height="343" width="487" /></a></p> <p>I’m getting so low on Guyana sugar. : ( It’s called Demerara Gold, if you were curious. Can you tell that it’s been a while since I’ve blogged? I can’t figure out the right words for anything! Anyways this little guy, I think his name is Bodum, came from Hudson’s Dirt Cheap. His ticket said $40, which is typical for electric kettles (?) but you know I NEVER pay ticket price. I got him for a whopping $8! He’s supposed to be my x-mas gift, but I begged The Jeffrey to let me have him early! Wow, is tea making a jiffy! He heats water so quick. I love it! </p> <p>So, there you have a few of my favorite things. Kinda like Oprah, but not. </p> <p> </p> <p>Cheers!</p> Meghanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06309795711492282592noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4137461249493794303.post-49706892891116558582011-08-29T18:06:00.002-05:002011-08-29T18:07:36.509-05:00Just Another Manic Monday!<p> </p> <p>Wow! Today was insane. By far my hardest day at work. Today I had to place orders for my department. It was CRAZY! I’m so happy to be chillin’ at home. I think I’ll adjust well with all the extra duties, it just takes some getting used to. </p> <p>We have lived in our new/old home for all of 8 months. I have trimmed our bushes out front at least 3 times. Do you know that all this time I’ve had a hydrangea bush! I’ve been dying to plant one and I’ve had one all along! I’m soooo happy. For some reason it just started blooming. I’m sure I trimmed it too close back in the spring! Whoops! </p> <p>Take a gander at these beauts!</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-JxVXKSrDHIQ/TlwbeR1YYaI/AAAAAAAAA4k/Ck2sx1rPzdU/s1600-h/glass%25252C%252520pillow%25252C%252520hydrangeas%252520029%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="glass, pillow, hydrangeas 029" alt="glass, pillow, hydrangeas 029" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgogPkJH2ZklTu7OLANkz17Re3wGoUFnQkCwIg1RKSgsxWgLjys_24Ee3xp1BiEkwJZTyM1ytoVD8lexMOnzZ_L9diPebpOCJzKzzp56zw764xGgZUdbIz8BggSHNWbV9Wt6Mk4ct7flw0/?imgmax=800" height="759" border="0" width="493" /></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-GUzsQFQpgTk/Tlwbf6H263I/AAAAAAAAA4s/02cwIrw4TLg/s1600-h/glass%25252C%252520pillow%25252C%252520hydrangeas%252520028%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="glass, pillow, hydrangeas 028" alt="glass, pillow, hydrangeas 028" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-STJ0LVO_6eg/TlwbgvfefKI/AAAAAAAAA4w/2fIOsIbymNg/glass%25252C%252520pillow%25252C%252520hydrangeas%252520028_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="772" border="0" width="501" /></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-DaPOHaZONCs/TlwbhHHmaJI/AAAAAAAAA40/uR_08moKwBw/s1600-h/glass%25252C%252520pillow%25252C%252520hydrangeas%252520032%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="glass, pillow, hydrangeas 032" alt="glass, pillow, hydrangeas 032" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh__ZXFs1pp9llVjApBWoqqJnnwm6p4v50BJnLMiveBSzMs_tF8VkYvZH6hkEAmgloI0tme9Cu5VleDTGVm67JCqvtK3TCGeBqzJMLr871lGbH7rJVYUlV929DwAHkjc4as4QlYpMPxEsw/?imgmax=800" height="794" border="0" width="507" /></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-D5jb25pDUHo/Tlwbi8S9ceI/AAAAAAAAA48/Q2t0XmMqyfk/s1600-h/glass%25252C%252520pillow%25252C%252520hydrangeas%252520035%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="glass, pillow, hydrangeas 035" alt="glass, pillow, hydrangeas 035" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-oyaaVozNEU4/TlwbjsrQr9I/AAAAAAAAA5A/nePgSvr2NuI/glass%25252C%252520pillow%25252C%252520hydrangeas%252520035_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="797" border="0" width="503" /></a></p> <p> </p> <p>Don’t you just adore that blue glass? It’s an old milk of magnesia bottle. Don’t ask me how old. Wonder why our meds today aren’t packaged in pretty things we can reuse? Long time no see! I’m a working woman now. I have a full-time job in an art store, so I haven’t been doing much decorating or remodeling. I miss blogging and painting, but really enjoy the benefits of a steady job. </p> <p>So, there hasn’t been much to write about. Jeff recently hung up my photo collage. I have been going through all of my art and arranging it in the most pleasing fashion. It’s taken me a while to get it just right, but now it’s on the wall and I lurv it! So, here it is!</p> <p> </p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidPBrEaV2oGkVOTTiEPeq9uPGW058wXk2btRMXtpwY8_Vcr7oJr1Xa1Zns0BeFAduYcg3JTcuR6d_CxZh5radQX6ADfOlz7ci7DbZrn0vXvjHzk_3NCUlmCLZOCr3UVw2MYkrfo3zjFCI/s1600-h/wall%252520art%252520002%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wall art 002" alt="wall art 002" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-LWzE-8VBmGU/TlWmLMpRt5I/AAAAAAAAA4Y/b1LSyU5Os20/wall%252520art%252520002_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="367" width="521" /></a></p> <p>The & sign is from Hobby Lobby. The frame under it says “The Earth Without Art is Just Eh”. I found it on Pinterest and felt that it fit us! The photographs and the art are mine. The old tennis racket I picked up at a thrift store for $1. The poster is from the Jessica Lea Mayfield concert. </p> <p>If you decide to make a wall collage make sure you incorporate meaningful things to you and your family. You won’t be able to stop looking at it….I can’t.</p> <p>This is on the wall in our living room, but it’s in the back part that we call the “studio”. Jeff drums in there, I paint and plan to make it into a reading nook. </p> <p>Here is another view from the living/entertainment area.
<br /></p> <p align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihcwO1FHgwbrwvlz7JMS78KdcKiBsoLrArd5Bnj3NfEcUsJ0x3wWoSlse5OFOjmD6LgjHJ0Or63PQYgQzd-9cuu8NE8I4ifXzrCSUIm08BHfhG1ltgkmkmslGKPCpo_AQYO3flIWU_218/s1600-h/wall%252520art%252520006%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wall art 006" alt="wall art 006" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1Jkj5MFAcUKW26LIEhoSthwNAU6PZ9w-XD9P00v6XpUskhDVYkAILFfVU-3kGScaZBgpmsXl0lkq7epX93tz6wqIClzUX-m5Z2aD5ql03e9h1WzMurd66Ga4EPN_hP_hteP4rCJELFIU/?imgmax=800" border="0" height="595" width="380" /></a></p> <p>It takes up the whole wall, but that was the plan. We need more wall space for all the art. I’ve had to take a break from painting, because I’ve ran out of room.</p> <p>That’s all for tonight. I’m working on some more pillows for the couch, so hopefully I’ll be able to share them with you all soon.</p> <p> </p> <p>Cheers!</p> Meghanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06309795711492282592noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4137461249493794303.post-37389430503483681692011-08-13T19:54:00.002-05:002011-08-13T19:55:19.351-05:00Thrifty Saturday??? What?<p> </p> <p>I don’t know if this should have gone on Thrifty Thursday or not. It’s not a before or after and it wasn’t really bought at a thrift store. But there is something you can learn from this post…hopefully, NEVER buy full-price! Well, I guess if you have to or if you have the money and are impatient. Whatever floats your boat. I don’t think that I’ve paid full-price on more than 10 things my whole life. Besides groceries and basic stuff. When it comes to clothes, household décor, furniture, I always wait until I find a good deal. My latest find has me all giddy.</p> <p>I have always wanted high quality bedding. Do you know how it feels to wake up surrounded by lush linens? Like your on a soft, fluffy cloud. I don’t know about ya’ll, but I feel like a princess when I’m surrounded by all that fluffy-goodness. </p> <p>But, have you noticed how expensive bedding is? Nice sheet sets, comforters, duvets, shams. If you get anything super nice, you have to pay an arm and a leg for it. The other day I got so lucky. Have you ever heard of Hudson’s Dirt Cheap? You really have to dig around to find anything decent, so guess what I did…dug! </p> <p>I’m obsessed with white bedding. I love clean white sheets, and I LOVE my down comforter. </p> <p>I have been needing a new white duvet cover for a while, but I wanted good quality without the BIG price.</p> <p>Hudson’s just happened to have exactly what I needed. I wish so badly I had taken a picture of the price tag. I know the duvet set (it included 2 shams) came from Target. I believe the brand was:</p> <h3>Fieldcrest® Luxury.</h3> <p>The price tag said: $89.99. Would you believe I got the cover and two shams for $10.00, yup, that’s right, only $10.00! </p> <p>Here she is, with all her 400 thread count glory:</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-g8vhNilMU4c/TkccyueP95I/AAAAAAAAA4E/ncoK8hldnHY/s1600-h/soap%252520009%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="soap 009" alt="soap 009" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg59jr7GVMOOVa7tlzIIq9nRtdruq_tJow_4zM3wAdhsywZiI4MI0aVikUUbw78NMqEWC1CzjsHjGz6XMkLf_C5xHgIcSWuoyfBfku1wzj-4KRzMogLgxLy5XF0ZwieNB4vrDt6V0x7wpE/?imgmax=800" height="599" border="0" width="389" /></a><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-fF_vT--ixuM/Tkcc1hyNwAI/AAAAAAAAA4M/4uFV5wRHU3Q/s1600-h/soap%252520010%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="soap 010" alt="soap 010" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdQ6KdD7OhVFBFUaCytLw1UuKUaWxrLrhiPvN4RprdyM8KmOcTtgPfDyIT-ptMieHyBdKcftuvg0TJqWspQmyLrWZE00dlkrDgqL_OmIz0vYOQbdV4hWqLCPwUdu-TDpRuA8dRes9azY0/?imgmax=800" height="354" border="0" width="503" /></a></p> <p> </p> <p>Please ignore the wrinkles, (I wasn’t home to take it out of the dryer on time) and the wood paneling (hopefully this will be our next room to remodel). I also love this cover because if I’m in the mood for an all white bed I can just flip it over.</p> <p>That’s it for today.</p> <p> </p> <p>Cheers!</p> Meghanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06309795711492282592noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4137461249493794303.post-60329168608646453522011-08-12T19:59:00.003-05:002011-08-12T20:05:38.079-05:00Before & After<p> </p> <p>My latest project has been a small white shelf. Here it is before I got a hold of it.</p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-0epvJwjwxto/TkXMQD1DCLI/AAAAAAAAA3g/Ebfpv_zuJo0/s1600-h/jewelrey%252520holder%252520and%252520shelf%252520002%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="jewelrey holder and shelf 002" alt="jewelrey holder and shelf 002" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-qaYXvtgLxHE/TkXMRiJ0NSI/AAAAAAAAA3k/Go-2Dl9IWdU/jewelrey%252520holder%252520and%252520shelf%252520002_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="352" border="0" width="500" /></a></p> <p>Actually I had gotten a hold of it. I filled in two holes with wood filler. Anyways here it is After:</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-tERes6ge9PU/TkXMTDrrWvI/AAAAAAAAA3o/sA9iq6QEyME/s1600-h/wall%252520shelf%252520006%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wall shelf 006" alt="wall shelf 006" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-k_IMAH9iV3E/TkXMUePsTJI/AAAAAAAAA3w/V3xaCeViP_g/wall%252520shelf%252520006_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="345" border="0" width="490" /></a></p> <p>I wanted this shelf to look like it had been weathered by the salt water of the Gulf. I wanted chippy paint, blues and grays, and nautical knobs. What do you think? Here’s the top:</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-C1y1F-_OL54/TkXMVr62UnI/AAAAAAAAA30/-q5k_yLfbOk/s1600-h/wall%252520shelf%252520001%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wall shelf 001" alt="wall shelf 001" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-QYWs-mjjoM4/TkXMX-dmVpI/AAAAAAAAA34/0NF-eEJGsqI/wall%252520shelf%252520001_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="352" border="0" width="500" /></a></p> <p>And here is a close up of the knobs:</p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-5nuczA3Lb8I/TkXMZ4qsoZI/AAAAAAAAA38/yJrUO0hJXyE/s1600-h/wall%252520shelf%252520009%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wall shelf 009" alt="wall shelf 009" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig4hN8nmBrqbqHL0nx8qmRisHeLSQU2IJUWsKax2HcP5p9t3_5p4IvATBdqTU5Qa2KEenVgAXtDnAPhhQLMbCDykMCHw91Pld6QKu_XuNCVgmeDWhF_BlT7wEf2d1qmHN_C-BmIH3oAUI/?imgmax=800" height="356" border="0" width="506" /></a></p> <p>Don’t you just love them!?! Thanks Hobby Lobby for your amazing collection of knobs. Who would have ever known? I think this is going to look right at home in our master bedroom, which of course will be nautical themed, but I might sell it for the right price… :)</p> <p>Cheers!</p> Meghanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06309795711492282592noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4137461249493794303.post-25572939503386016152011-08-11T14:32:00.002-05:002011-08-11T14:42:06.911-05:00Thrifty Thursday<p> </p> <p>Today I have a quite unusual item. I bought it because I really liked the design, but I didn’t really know what this “thing” was. I went home and googled my little heart out, until I found out that I had bought a cheese server. Now, I love me some cheese, but I have never in my life seen a reason for a cheese server! Anyways I re-purposed it into a jewelry holder. If you would like to purchase it I am selling it for $15. You can message me on here or through facebook.</p> <p align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpYicoF-yASGiL8fAyWukGWuJAhY2Djtxq_tdVWHydGlbox8S4P9mT07PldeutGqE2FUomMnjvsYsQspcDlx1fvmVQ5f8SgXRrY6CqPJFrbL4bnEoD8LRUS2NAbO3INRbYpOF8ads122M/s1600-h/wall%252520art%252520and%252520pink%252520scrub%252520001%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="wall art and pink scrub 001" alt="wall art and pink scrub 001" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-C54wRQ7wwuw/TkQuP8DUiCI/AAAAAAAAA3E/StkzDtxl9ic/wall%252520art%252520and%252520pink%252520scrub%252520001_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="571" width="364" /></a></p> <p align="center">Before</p> <p>Where all that tan stuff is there used to be a spot to hold your cheese knife!</p> <p align="center"> </p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-ylJTL2Rj4Q4/TkQuQgd3CaI/AAAAAAAAA3I/iCkP6I0P1uI/s1600-h/jewelrey%252520holder%252520and%252520shelf%252520010%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="jewelrey holder and shelf 010" alt="jewelrey holder and shelf 010" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEir0uA84XiQyIVsDCWjnFs34HAUngJjtPSqI-RLboYVNbqJ2MXP9LjjePI1pUrL6DjNwFLislhBsOPVXBjrFThXEG-HBawKjTzyaIfrpOKyyy00X4n-rBw58LfdkNQAJBZUSzrZGIiGPIg/?imgmax=800" border="0" height="652" width="416" /></a></p> <blockquote> <p align="center">After</p> <p align="center">I painted it white, lightly distressed it, and added a black and white ribbon.</p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-UP1eaUx3lf0/TkQuR9AbE9I/AAAAAAAAA3Q/8vxZcN1X1vg/s1600-h/jewelrey%252520holder%252520and%252520shelf%252520008%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="jewelrey holder and shelf 008" alt="jewelrey holder and shelf 008" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-b_fMKFoE2r4/TkQuSIrJfWI/AAAAAAAAA3U/ud6h84WQ4j0/jewelrey%252520holder%252520and%252520shelf%252520008_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="464" width="301" /></a></p></blockquote> <p>I also added some super cute knobs from Hobby Lobby. Do any of you come up with cool things when you are asleep or barely awake? Usually I have “creative block” (same idea as writer’s block), but I have found the more I think creatively and out of the box, the more ideas keep flowing. It has been quite strange and busy in my brain lately. I honestly believe it is because of this blog. This blog keeps me on my toes. I feel like I’m being pushed (in a good way) to think more! I love it.</p> <p>This is what I have for you today. It is mostly for all you homeschooling mommies out there, or traveling buffs. Honestly This idea was triggered by Etsy and Pinterest. I’m not sure if someone else has ever thought of it before, probably, but I haven’t seen this exact thing, so I’m claiming it, lol. </p> <p>Here are the two things that inspired me.</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgclpcbmROxThH08ArtUytRb3-tMrXx3wgTqoD9YlungTTnsCqbjAB_C2Wm_tN6Ei4j6Yz9sy3OUHy1hJD66XM7FeAMzSGS5Xugzdxz6ETTURbec2iA-eaIjMzt8pKHYspoaxIsZKeuwx8/s1600-h/image%25255B4%25255D.png"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="image" alt="image" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRKQOFgL_NFHjhOjTX5gF6Z4ZPaX5HNVFQV50yrjQLLCfWw1N8fD_hvawTO0S-Q3Vw8A2AbI6NmndE-7h1RD_KdxTPAoJHfo1roM4lOx6NBIhHhkfX0TUWp0OfIiPx0l-CZBD3jVwRkDM/?imgmax=800" border="0" height="400" width="373" /></a></p> <p>(For your info I just checked through Etsy and this is the only type of chalkboard globe they had).</p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-q_EykZc8jQI/Tj_7kT1ANMI/AAAAAAAAA24/7FeNREaB6cM/s1600-h/image%25255B8%25255D.png"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="image" alt="image" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-AYlz_XfYiY0/Tj_7k7TcUYI/AAAAAAAAA28/at1n3rKJQkw/image_thumb%25255B4%25255D.png?imgmax=800" border="0" height="156" width="125" /></a></p> <p align="left">(Here is the link to make your own chalkboard paint: <a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/271574/custom-color-chalkboard-paint">chalkboard paint.</a>)</p> <p align="left">Have you figured out what I want to do yet? My idea is to make two colors of chalkboard paint, one green, one blue. Then brush the chalkboard paint onto to globe (earth=green, water=blue, duh)! You have to be good at coloring in the lines for that part. </p> <p align="left">So, now you have a globe that is covered in chalkboard, but you can still see the water and the shape of the land. </p> <p align="left">What do you do next? Hmmm…how about teach your children the 7 continents or all the bodies of water on the earth? They can write the correct names in the correct places with chalk!</p> <p align="left">I’m not trying to toot my own horn, but I think it’s brilliant! I’ve been wanting to collect globes for our living room for such a long time. The only place I have seen them is on Etsy and they are WAY over priced. I guess I’ll just keep searching.</p> <p align="left">Anyways, I would love your input, especially those of you who homeschool.</p> <p align="left"> </p> <p align="left">Cheers!</p> Meghanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06309795711492282592noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4137461249493794303.post-4616497927994558952011-08-07T20:08:00.002-05:002011-08-07T20:09:48.563-05:00To Shampoo or Not to Shampoo?<p> </p> <p>Ya’ll are probably thinking I have fell off my rocker, right? How nasty is that, not to shampoo your hair? I am a shampoo, conditioner, body wash, scrub, freak. Anytime I see some kind of girly, smell good, stuff on sale I buy it. Lately my hair has been really dry and frizzy. This could be attributed to the hot and humid summer we are having here in North AL or to my genes. Even my stylist noticed a difference in my texture. I knew that shampoo strips your hair of essential oils, but I had been buying sulfate free, paraben free, and every kind of free I could find. I also know that after a while you get build-up on your hair from all the spray, mousse, cream, conditioner, etc. Some shampoos and conditioners actually have wax that coats your hair. How yucky is that! </p> <p>On pinterest (my new favorite addiction), I saw a pin about cleansing your hair without shampoo. Can you guess what amazing, everyday household ingredient they used?</p> <p>Did you guess baking soda? The thing that threw me was that you are supposed to condition with Apple Cider Vinegar! Which is another item that has millions of purposes. Of course you water these items considerably and if you have naturally oily, thin hair you only want to use the ACV on your ends. According to the internet you will have amazing, shiny hair like you’ve never had before!</p> <p>So, I’m going to break from the shampoo and conditioner for a while and try these natural alternatives. Since I have a ton of shampoo and conditioner in my stash I will probably use them every other week, so as not to waste all that dough! </p> <p>I found an amazing post about it all that I want ya’ll to read. I will keep you all posted on how the process goes. I’m mostly scared of smelling like ACV, so I have decided to make an concoction of tea (you can use lavender, chamomile, or rosemary) and probably coconut oil (which makes curly hair glorious)! This I will spray in my hair after I shower and rub into my scalp, as a leave-in conditioner. </p> <p>I’m actually super stoked, and I know this will save money in the long run, after we run out of my stash.</p> <p>Jeff and I both have curly, thick, dry hair, so I can only report on how it reacts to this type of hair. I probably don’t need to wash my hair but every two days, but I kinda feel gross if I don’t, even though it’s not oily. I want my hair to be shiny and healthy, so I’m gonna do what I can. </p> <p>Anyways check out <a href="http://simplemom.net/how-to-clean-your-hair-without-shampoo/">this link.</a></p> <p> </p> <p>Cheers!</p>Meghanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06309795711492282592noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4137461249493794303.post-59842670900097279692011-08-04T13:03:00.002-05:002011-08-04T13:55:08.741-05:00Thrifty Thursday!<p> </p> <p>Alrighty, I’m going to try this out. Hopefully I will be able to post a Thrifty Thursday every Thursday. </p> <p>What Thrifty Thursday is all about: I will post a before and after (if I remember to take them) of thrift store finds that I give a new life to. Some of the finds might be amazing without any revamping, if that is the case I’ll post them too. Most everything you will see on here will be less than $20. I’m cheap, I know. I’m going to start you out today with my favorite thing.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-4UhMVOqxGxQ/Tjre070L-eI/AAAAAAAAA10/poMkmhjXTHs/s1600-h/image%25255B3%25255D.png"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="image" alt="image" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-UR48T1jU9bo/Tjre2qHsuII/AAAAAAAAA14/M35iRhOVtUQ/image_thumb%25255B1%25255D.png?imgmax=800" border="0" height="240" width="240" /></a></p> <p>I’ll admit to you, I forgot to take a “before”, so I found this image on Etsy. This coaster and coaster holder is currently for sale for $18 on Etsy. I got mine at a thrift store for $1.50! We needed some cork coasters to absorb water from our cups, so our coffee table doesn’t get destroyed. Anyways, here is what I did to this outdated thingy.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-V1a18qglPWo/Tjre3SUvuHI/AAAAAAAAA18/La1IoEDl3Ss/s1600-h/coasters%252520002%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="coasters 002" alt="coasters 002" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-E3Qc6tp1V48/Tjre4FPgt3I/AAAAAAAAA2A/ZcrU9MjnaTI/coasters%252520002_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="642" width="396" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBOEGL_J9mMr5Hb6QptXIMiqMzTrFqFg6_jShfYim-wYp8mJUlEW1DMoX-kP74hCzSmgv-4H8ehYen8iGr7vlfte_TKXdaSd7YC84WaXT6TWaF0yL622vtjsMVVCikAwxnN2COpEdn4Bo/s1600-h/coasters%252520004%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="coasters 004" alt="coasters 004" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-hbQlrKQA5jg/Tjre5nyy2dI/AAAAAAAAA2I/nccBau_az0Q/coasters%252520004_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="347" width="493" /></a><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-YoPI-Xp58FU/Tjre6cVLH6I/AAAAAAAAA2M/NBprmk4cosM/s1600-h/coasters%252520003%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="coasters 003" alt="coasters 003" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-flAxPJ5j5Ik/Tjre6oBJ_iI/AAAAAAAAA2Q/Z3cpkF88at4/coasters%252520003_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="335" width="503" /></a></p> <p>So, I primed and then spray painted it Heirloom White. Then I paint each cork a different color to match our living room. I decided it’d be super cool to stamp an S for our last name on each one, so I just used a rubber stamp dipped in white paint. I really loved the medallion on the top, it looked like a tarnish brass, so I sanded some of the white paint off to let the natural beauty shine through (that sounded super corny). Lastly I lightly distressed it with a sanding block. I am sooooo happy. This is probably one of my favorite things I’ve made. When I saw it in the thrift store I bought it because we needed coasters, but I also could really see the potential. I know, I’m silly for raving over an old wooden box that your mother probably had in the 70’s. Oh well. I can’t believe someone has one for $18 on Etsy. I wonder how much I could charge for mine, not that I would ever sell it…</p> <p>Here is another exciting item. I didn’t take a before, but imagine a plain ole’ Jane light wooden box. It is now a satin black on the inside and a hammered silver on the outside (I wanted a metal look). This boy is heavy. I guess he would be a plain ole’ Joe since I called him a boy. Oh well, back to the story.</p> <p> I am all about organization in my new house. I want to keep everything clutter free. This item will be for sale on my facebook page, and maybe ebay if I so choose. Since I am lazy I did not pose him in multiple ways. What I mean by that is, I have a lot of ideas for him. (Why I keep referring to items with personal pronouns I do not know). Anyways, this boy (hehe) can be used to sit on your dining room table to store your cloth napkins and other linens, silverware, salt and pepper, and other miscellaneous items of your choosing. Another great idea I had for it (there we go) was to use it for craft supplies. It would look great storing all my <strike>or your </strike> paint brushes, paints, colored pencils, etc. I think this next picture is probably the original intended use.</p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-dKwrdtn3F7w/Tjre7qqBgaI/AAAAAAAAA2U/IRI6pDADu9k/s1600-h/coasters%252520005%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="coasters 005" alt="coasters 005" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcjBAeX08hD2RiasCxYY0-98jgqcZVpY3sZHswITI1NSmINUGJThFVsPabjTB5bSnHyyi5S-AtxoR2lfLOnrK7zOiCUfQQmbhAWOGzubu_tJ-3bXvZneazQO-2ceR0v5brgACe4mCmTg8/?imgmax=800" border="0" height="361" width="513" /></a></p> <p>I really like this shot. I don’t know why. You may notice some things I like to do while sitting in front of the telly. Read, (those are the Narnia books, for those of you interested), I also might read some magazines (I believe there are five of them rolled up in there). We also have our one million remote controls stored in it. You gotta have your Wii-motes, knitting needles, scissors, ruler, calculator, ya know whatever might suit your fancy and help you <strike>be lazy and not have to get up while your favorite show is on.</strike></p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCd_FZUjc7F-qlazw4rlepkCMriwz5A_4Qef4xONCUChx1DvReqFM1njIA4rN2-C5mv1J7kjPLD7wZ0Co9l_y5nSvLbCtez7vyOdcuEQn5GW8EfFH7QURxiFTgfHucNO7QUTUuk0iti5c/s1600-h/coasters%252520006%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="coasters 006" alt="coasters 006" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-NUV-32K33aY/Tjre9_m3h_I/AAAAAAAAA2g/RiUqsLYUJm8/coasters%252520006_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="161" width="240" /></a><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-aO7h_VB_PvM/Tjre-_CXSYI/AAAAAAAAA2k/J7Mqe2AgwyY/s1600-h/coasters%252520008%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="coasters 008" alt="coasters 008" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5gTgyXxanAZBdNdGw4HlAnaKJf_-QvGvZ9hXUx855NWidcZX39hDXEJf4bMxxw7u14laOtlgvTkHfuK0XT7cKaf0dY9xW3GbTmj7-vJ5FxNMfYjQtKHyZTyY2qtvv_2E6snz0pnyMMW4/?imgmax=800" border="0" height="161" width="240" /></a></p> <p>Also pictured is one of my glass jars from <a href="http://absorbedinart.blogspot.com/2011/06/glass-bottles.html">this post</a>. I decided to just spray paint them a flat white. This one is obviously holding a rose from <a href="http://absorbedinart.blogspot.com/2011/04/front-porch-and-yard-ideas.html">this rose bush.</a> Which is well and thriving despite my black thumb.</p> <p>Okay, I’m just going to share these two with you today. Stay tuned next week for some more thrifty finds!</p> <p>Cheers!</p>Meghanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06309795711492282592noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4137461249493794303.post-30971580920530435022011-08-03T11:58:00.002-05:002011-08-03T12:02:17.919-05:00Photography<p> </p> <p>I’ll admit that this blog has mostly been in the direction of design. Decorating is my hobby. Turning trash to treasure is my hobby (I’ve been pretty consumed with this one lately). BUT photography is ONE of my greatest passions. I wish I had subjects to model for me everyday. I wish I had the gas money to travel the world and photograph everything that touches my heart. Photography is such a wonderful gift. Do you value it? Think about it, which of your memories are the clearest? When I think back over the 26 years I’ve been alive, certain memories stick out; then I find a photograph of that memory or event. If I didn’t have a picture I probably would have forgotten all about it. </p> <p> I love photojournalism. I love photos that tell a story. Do you really treasure all the mundane, scheduled, random activities of every day? That’s you. That’s your family. That’s your life. I believe it should be captured on film. Why forget about those sleepy moments in bed cuddled up to the one you love? Why forget about little feet jumping on the bed? What about amazing picnics or camping in the backyard? I encourage you to document everything by film. </p> <p>Speaking of film, it’s not actually film anymore. I’m sure most of you have a digital camera. One of the greatest benefits of digital is that you have all your pictures organized and sorted on your computer. Long gone are the days when you took that 24 exposure to wal-mart to get developed. We don’t have to print out all of our shots anymore, you can actually see them before hand. This saves so much money in developing. </p> <p> All right I’m done ranting. This post was supposed to be about my lately published shots on a music website. I wanted to share the link with you and some other photographs that I got to take at the Jessica Lea Mayfield concert. Ferraby Lionheart opened for her and he is a wonderful musician from Tennessee, but currently lives in Hollywood. I love that he is true to his roots, one of my favorite songs by him speaks of tea and cornbread. It’s lovely. Look ‘em up people! I wouldn’t steer you wrong.</p> <p><a href="http://consequenceofsound.net/2011/08/live-review-jessica-lea-mayfield-at-birminghams-the-bottletree-729/">Click here to see article.</a></p> <p align="center">Here are some of my favorite shots of the night.</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwB0k2pNWIseApvPUQfbFgFsnTaHe0lE67GQ4PlkebxZAK99n9rrqiqz22un4TPv5c01NvRsiYjz55ZKORwAAw3-lHuHSfKGdj_ZTXSMNWtc3iSXWhNY317LYZw0mVY4-zYw1AxUyChXc/s1600-h/JLM%252520and%252520Ferraby%252520Lionheart%252520008%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="JLM and Ferraby Lionheart 008" alt="JLM and Ferraby Lionheart 008" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-8cNbwhV3OKw/Tjl-GIUGuCI/AAAAAAAAA0U/Q2y2NRci7Mc/JLM%252520and%252520Ferraby%252520Lionheart%252520008_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="240" width="161" /></a></p> <p align="center">Bottletree décor.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-p3IrdJ1iyCQ/Tjl-G1zJStI/AAAAAAAAA0Y/oOqFUA6szLw/s1600-h/JLM%252520and%252520Ferraby%252520Lionheart%252520023%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="JLM and Ferraby Lionheart 023" alt="JLM and Ferraby Lionheart 023" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-6yOpKgVtkV0/Tjl-Hc2KYeI/AAAAAAAAA0c/VXTglWM4Na4/JLM%252520and%252520Ferraby%252520Lionheart%252520023_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="603" width="385" /></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-u-BiLrhqojs/Tjl-IfFFDvI/AAAAAAAAA0g/9eKxT93GxoQ/s1600-h/JLM%252520and%252520Ferraby%252520Lionheart%252520027%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="JLM and Ferraby Lionheart 027" alt="JLM and Ferraby Lionheart 027" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUerxOV2Zzb5KQ1oC6VYzdvVfD_thyhdoUjwlclr9yF_2Z13GptIq0LypK5ItJcygfrYrSI9KEaLl7xeviFzujv55Bw8BAGAjaMGnXAY-7fyWQM2HkjTp2CLEh8HWtxBdUHgX-ThLMRDw/?imgmax=800" border="0" height="495" width="316" /></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-wsdF3BNGw2A/Tjl-JpHuIRI/AAAAAAAAA0o/B6Da9A3hE6U/s1600-h/JLM%252520and%252520Ferraby%252520Lionheart%252520032%25255B14%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="JLM and Ferraby Lionheart 032" alt="JLM and Ferraby Lionheart 032" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-dltoNmE4Jjs/Tjl-KHjopYI/AAAAAAAAA0s/3_mKWs27Kqw/JLM%252520and%252520Ferraby%252520Lionheart%252520032_thumb%25255B8%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="425" width="253" /></a><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-CTEMN74oFwY/Tjl-Kk6pWDI/AAAAAAAAA0w/zoyR0Qu1HL4/s1600-h/JLM%252520and%252520Ferraby%252520Lionheart%252520041%25255B9%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="JLM and Ferraby Lionheart 041" alt="JLM and Ferraby Lionheart 041" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-ZVMmQf6tXfo/Tjl-K3vN9DI/AAAAAAAAA00/ne34QSQsemU/JLM%252520and%252520Ferraby%252520Lionheart%252520041_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="424" width="254" /></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-jRJ6_1o6w-4/Tjl-L8vYm3I/AAAAAAAAA04/HGFBKbYOikc/s1600-h/JLM%252520and%252520Ferraby%252520Lionheart%252520050%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="JLM and Ferraby Lionheart 050" alt="JLM and Ferraby Lionheart 050" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-kgHlU0Xi4S4/Tjl-MW-meLI/AAAAAAAAA08/R7C6scvHi2E/JLM%252520and%252520Ferraby%252520Lionheart%252520050_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" border="0" height="307" width="436" /></a></p> <p align="center">Whoops, who’s that? I have. I love to barter. Someone’s trash is always someone else’s treasure. I am lovin’ my latest barter, but first I want to show you one of the things I sent my friend’s way. Her living room is mostly red, black, and tan so don’t you think this little beaut fit in perfectly?</p> <p align="center"> </p> <p align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-ArjvjzeyUpN1y5Y0aSLh7hqIWd3qit_9e8otT-odtV_W_ofoCoKBZkIzEab35Sx6DbFTxnyeiceur1BKQZsq3Ymkq9RBugzuinAouVpit-8Oxs5X2bFyFQKgQXqcuV4TjW7aUiOsM0k/s1600-h/ebay%252520001%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="ebay 001" border="0" alt="ebay 001" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVYJwSy3Bu9fZ102KpDG0FfdwWhhQRDlj7Z66znmvL263DpCUOB4nbNh3a1qDf3oxtGmwkByqxKwmFlqGM9UZIffnz3a10vb-e_Vf6NUjaqxbf5UXGZf6RruAy8VNjm3EgUGV4Z9o-jjs/?imgmax=800" width="268" height="413"></a></p> <p>Yup that is my latest and greatest thrift store find, but did you see what it looked like before?</p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-HXXOBuHm-_s/Tjl0cKhqMDI/AAAAAAAAAzg/WyILsAIdAhI/s1600-h/thrift%252520finds%252520%252526%252520pillow%252520002%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="thrift finds & pillow 002" border="0" alt="thrift finds & pillow 002" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-qTUrj7yVaK4/Tjl0c0A3aGI/AAAAAAAAAzk/1Xt5PHmuK-c/thrift%252520finds%252520%252526%252520pillow%252520002_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="299" height="461"></a></p> <p>And yes, I did actually manage to snag a “before” shot. My second favorite thing, is this hidden, little, blue door. Ahhhh….What do you think she will store in it? Usually in the decorating world they tell you to have 3 maybe 4 (at the max) colors per room. One needs to be a neutral, the other two accent colors. What do ya’ll think about this rule? I totally understand where they are coming from because you don’t want your room to look super busy. We all want to have a “put together look”. Don’t we? Hummmm…</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/--vNd-6y_BTc/TjHN_0EOsXI/AAAAAAAAAsw/spplwZRZXBA/s1600-h/image%25255B4%25255D.png"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="image" alt="image" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-miczt7phbQ8/TjHODxHSxLI/AAAAAAAAAs0/05bqMfqk9E4/image_thumb%25255B2%25255D.png?imgmax=800" height="583" border="0" width="451" /></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-ZWyD93XqCR8/TjHOILeUN6I/AAAAAAAAAs4/CdaHzOe6PEc/s1600-h/image%25255B9%25255D.png"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="image" alt="image" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXkln49WwknYxKmlt7e79AmsE0PGDBTSVSBpODGlt_rOheTinvxzlKCSnxkDaC6q_s7YTgDmaSW7irCZWXS1jmFC6gUhpAbrHlbeXE9vND01An0ai76p7n_xYyIUYLrOjzjvacNJKdIO0/?imgmax=800" height="342" border="0" width="469" /></a></p> <p> I am a color person. I love color. Color makes me happy. Color makes me smile (a little repetitive I know). What’s wrong with rainbows and unicorns?</p> <p>Here is what I think. Do what you love. Do what makes you happy. There shouldn’t be stupid rules to follow in your own home! Everyone has their own style. Maybe you LOVE color. Blow it up, it’s your home after all. The bottom line is: you have to live in your house, you need to be comfortable. Your family needs to be comfortable. Does it look best to limit your living room (or other rooms) to 3 or 4 colors? Why yes it does, but does that really matter to you? Why does it matter; because that’s what the experts say? Don’t limit your creativity because HGTV tells you to only have 3 colors in your room!</p> <p>If you saw my post yesterday about my bookshelves, then you probably know where I’m coming from. I can see blue, green, orange, red, brown, gray, white, and that is not including the book colors! I am an artist. I love to paint. Again, I love color. Most of my paintings are really vibrant and have a TON of colors on them. I don’t think I should paint more paintings with only 3 or 4 colors just so they match my living room.</p> <p>Think out of the box. I encourage you to REBEL (in the decorating world, that is)! </p> <p> </p> <p>Cheers!</p>Meghanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06309795711492282592noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4137461249493794303.post-42173040949752945522011-07-27T13:19:00.002-05:002011-07-27T13:24:53.957-05:00Not My Forté<p> </p> <p>Before I really get into this post I should explain that I am awful at arranging decorations on shelves, mantels, etc. I have so many odds and ends, once I start putting them out it usually looks cluttered. I need your input, because if my bookshelves (which is what I’m showing you) look crowded, please be a friend and tell me.</p> <p>Ta-Da!</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-NawgI5qCTNg/TjBWrJeNnzI/AAAAAAAAAsA/m4wjhid1qz8/s1600-h/bookshelves%252520012%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="bookshelves 012" alt="bookshelves 012" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTz-pxv-wyJ1tx6TFMg91UVd3frzR_nhomXM5Z6TbltSBcI8CerGOqD00TzRRJtt10Gm7h84HhVqZTWD_wgcE_N_slpMgnU9tZDedj9H51Vav8O-Lrt-t46pu9w0WOMsDHCn4sEnWj-Uk/?imgmax=800" border="0" height="365" width="519" /></a></p> <p>For those of you interested I’m going to go through all the interesting things on my shelves. If your not into it, you can just exit out of this post because I’m practically done. </p> <p>We will start on the top of the left bookshelf.</p> <p>The paintings are abstract art made by yours truly. They were painted in 2003 and are both for sale. The blue and brown pitcher is from Hobby Lobby, as are the orange and red flowers. To the right of that is a fox head Russian crystal decanter. I picked this up at a yard sale for $15 and then looked it up on the web and theses babies sell for $300+. Here’s a close up:</p> <p align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidEmBJ6o1iyua_VEhC3fj9M0omkohJ6UUz3j04y_5pm20R4r168ozKNiWxuQw7Lb-ERztw-MY09ZLOC7_qiB8zifDN2nVzRdoUrCXUfWzS77x0xkPXzk66evRVT8kvNdq45AY970h00ZM/s1600-h/Decor%252520004-1%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="Decor 004-1" alt="Decor 004-1" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipWEAhj-FYX3tBRKroPmxcwkZf9M9QNu-rfdD_I1wVTEfLlnejMqnSVyLgEmb-i5rjwzHuUXFVcBAVS1fTCPiTdB6C-pxC1fUbOJ978KwPhQQ-EzPHLeMe2VwgMuguxTQ3iaYuQZCsBaI/?imgmax=800" border="0" height="714" width="439" /></a></p> <p>Isn’t it gorgeous and regal? </p> <p>Then on the second shelf we have a picture of my paw-paw Ray when he was in the navy. I love this picture of him (he is so special that he is the only person in a frame on my bookshelves). I believe the frame was on sale at Kohls. Next is an oblong, silver, bread basket I got at a thrift store for $3, inside you will find an old Nikormat camera, a Bell and Howell recorder (from the 50’s), and an old Sun 600 polaroid. I really love the way they look in the silver basket. Then there is a foam craft, lime green owl from 1981. He’s for sale if anyone is interested. Beside the owl is a white glazed pottery bowl my little brother made me for Christmas a few years back.</p> <p>On the next shelf are two small planters I purchased at Lowes on sale for less than a dollar. Inside them is organic dirt and some moss I dug up out of my front yard. I am using the planters as book ends. I really love how these look and the fact that the project was dirt cheap! hehe</p> <p>The next shelf has an old fossil we dug up in our front yard when we lived in Greenville, AL. It looks like a fossil of a shell. Other than these things there are just books.</p> <p>If anyone is interested in the black and white lamp, I purchased it at Old Tyme Pottery a few years back, but it was made by Isaac Mizrahi. I think I paid $10 for it.</p> <p>Next is the bookshelf on the right:</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDCHMhCFnFHsLz5PLJukLle0HQBRyFNjFIpuezAN9KnBPxQfkSnZO2xuxJSzjcFdGtRIosZk6wzL4X7TNRaKmC29fz1NRKU6PM-V4AMeQKfovAjClBHhLP1lig-hV0vqR5vgC9B1MsWQQ/s1600-h/bookshelves%252520004%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="bookshelves 004" alt="bookshelves 004" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm1TBrKAF5SPjg6OERk7-gg6WiuvdwKnLij4gvUaoB4I2hrlzsKKLZnkgxUrY1aCr-tGGdJRt-qSBBZI_saqwwNYzeF6cL7b9tCOxn4UUyuBpLcCZX2BkM5jclPRRVg22D_KXt6JpF2Xc/?imgmax=800" border="0" height="567" width="361" /></a></p> <p>On the top of this bookshelf is another original oil painting by me, also for sale, along with an old telephone box. It also has a drawer on the inside that I painted blue and distressed. The door closure is magnetized. </p> <p>The top shelf has a little ceramic birdie I purchased at a thrift store for 50 cents. Beside it is a phone from Kirklands.</p> <p>Next is a really cool turquoise blue box (more details about it tomorrow) with a S from Hobby Lobby, painted a hammered silver. The shelf under this has a collection of blue vases from random places over the years. The black and white vase/bowl was a present from my little sister.</p> <p>There you have it. Hopefully they don’t look cluttered or too busy. Feel free to share any ideas!</p> <p> </p> <p>Cheers!</p>Meghanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06309795711492282592noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4137461249493794303.post-35614290796462111692011-07-25T10:39:00.007-05:002011-08-29T18:31:54.312-05:00Pillows<p>Hopefully, once my house gets back to order I can start sewing more pillows. I’m obsessed with pillows! I’ve always “collected” them. I have been buying vintage fabric and I have great plans for them.</p> <p>This pillow is one I’ve been working on for months to go in my new living room. It wouldn’t have taken me that long, but other projects have been popping up and taking priority. I felt like I needed a little texture on my couch, besides fabric. That is one thing I’m really going for in the new living room, lots of texture! The pillow is aqua and knitted in 100% cotton. It is super duper soft. It is actually a pillow cover and it is fastened by metallic silver buttons.</p> <p>Here it is:</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-3YK4D0IfyWs/Ti2OK4OTyTI/AAAAAAAAArI/wT1t5EN9Tiw/s1600-h/thrift%252520finds%252520%252526%252520pillow%252520004%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px" title="thrift finds & pillow 004" alt="thrift finds & pillow 004" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJalkN64XKqJiFr0Pv43jOHCztVXF6szstVUstQHmYduzOg8FQ42YC9iwoAFGbWUV7ZDiKkIoBGZAFVlRsWznMMC9qCS58j8ae17WEEmTjAvU-M6qzVy-ZcFOdcJyZ5-4BmFmi2e-uGpc/?imgmax=800" height="642" border="0" width="409" /></a></p> <p>By the way, this wooden chair is a garage sale find I picked up in FWB, Florida for $15. I fell in love with the legs on this baby. I normally wouldn’t pay that much for a chair, but if it’s really special I will splurge. It’s future home is around my dining room table.</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-lwXBMmSQEWc/Ti2OMqf0pUI/AAAAAAAAArQ/M40_jse_6Dc/s1600-h/thrift%252520finds%252520%252526%252520pillow%252520005%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px" title="thrift finds & pillow 005" alt="thrift finds & pillow 005" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-3edNWYDJZek/Ti2ONCT2QXI/AAAAAAAAArU/KDmhA1Iv5r4/thrift%252520finds%252520%252526%252520pillow%252520005_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="356" border="0" width="493" /></a></p> <p>My auto focus was off on these pictures, sorry for the blur. </p> <p align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi95cveXULwJgazU4l5bjoBtj46Z_qFRkGCbX5LjElibpnTEELMZGWi4ExvxfdB2Brin7FJ0mRFZdCTV0H3lAbWqsevtajmL0MR3l_NESybQ6xtq0_R-m7Ffr4drXQ78GSuxhJNtYuHr38/s1600-h/thrift%252520finds%252520%252526%252520pillow%252520006%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="thrift finds & pillow 006" alt="thrift finds & pillow 006" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-nwFlNY_eJqw/Ti2OOIYTFsI/AAAAAAAAArc/Qx5uOe6qpvg/thrift%252520finds%252520%252526%252520pillow%252520006_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="374" border="0" width="243" /></a><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-3eI-KjoxWy8/Ti2OPKCjIfI/AAAAAAAAArg/_E_usvshPjU/s1600-h/thrift%252520finds%252520%252526%252520pillow%252520007%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="thrift finds & pillow 007" alt="thrift finds & pillow 007" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-bg7gBSmGKpQ/Ti2OPwv4ItI/AAAAAAAAArk/ptitD_O4rUY/thrift%252520finds%252520%252526%252520pillow%252520007_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="374" border="0" width="243" /></a></p> <p>I thought it would be nice to have extra texture by ribbing the closure. You can make the back the front (button-side), or face it the other way so the smooth side is facing out. It just depends on your preference. I think I’m going to list this pillow cover in my <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/absorbednart?ref=pr_shop_more">Etsy Shop</a> if anyone is interested. I will take custom orders, so you can choose the colors to match your room!</p> <p align="center"><span style="color:#f79646;"><u><span style="font-size:180%;">Floor Pillow</span></u></span></p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-g69fS4Zmet4/Ti49MuDgptI/AAAAAAAAAro/sijo2J1vJVw/s1600-h/ebay%252520029%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="ebay 029" alt="ebay 029" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-M-C3txrQ-Ek/Ti49NUhhc4I/AAAAAAAAArs/5kESOSPNKVM/ebay%252520029_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="341" border="0" width="482" /></a></p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-3yPRQkQSFtI/Ti49O4rhptI/AAAAAAAAArw/4Zoj6xmva7Q/s1600-h/ebay%252520030%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="ebay 030" alt="ebay 030" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF7mDaR2jnxoNojNPeLYbwSUg1kMYLumQeJbrnt-ZkR_5zSRKMj3P6nkqOznykjHFRz_F2_SljMs9dekLlru3s6E_0M1SqhwbTw6lZDv4w12b0IoP1Ft74E5T0GJAdhVsvjOVdZQO-rO8/?imgmax=800" height="346" border="0" width="489" /></a></p> <p>This pillow was made from a silky vintage handkerchief I bought today for 25 cents and an old pillowcase. I had a floor pillow I bought at Old Tyme Pottery years ago; I never used it. I cut the white pillowcase to the size of the scarf/hankie and then put the right sides together and hand-sewed 3 sides. (I chose to hand sew bec/ of the silky material and the fact that my kitchen table is covered with drums, so I have no place for my sewing machine). Then, I flipped the case right side out and stuffed my old pillow inside. Lastly you sew up the open side. Ta-Da! A new floor pillow for our living room. Does anyone else use throw pillows?</p> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfTzUEyQNmaHYtEbnFyqZ0M8HvRv5cPKR137f9ht2RR0iBGwNCIBfAVd9lNGC6sowwol_Rbxr8U2MxIeXxYX3aIUgFjm54zauc1rT6IIXBsP7ixt1tIuGb0RY5UiqAkmp33ubKbicnggA/s1600-h/bookshelves%252520009%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px" title="bookshelves 009" alt="bookshelves 009" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyKEs1d-qNVl_h5pxWq61dKkOX32EmEs6pV_wBh2eEa17_GiOYPETB7nblmjTVTUQlgt3vvTbNVEvGgL9xwKjTgTn7URs9htwTPOPnji9fZc_OVfOjnxjHMEdfoZ9qig_QdvsMGQD55Q4/?imgmax=800" height="666" border="0" width="416" /></a> <p>Keira, I said FLOOR pillow, not DOG pillow! uggghhhh… :D</p> <p align="center"></p> <p align="center"><span style=" ;font-size:180%;color:#f79646;" ><u>Placemat Pillows</u></span></p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-AQLu8sPjP9g/TjB6eA9syoI/AAAAAAAAAso/h7lII9XoeaI/s1600-h/pillow%252520002%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px" title="pillow 002" alt="pillow 002" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgblhXLImFFHGtDSnSRThzH4dMYse_oftoij2n852KQ1TwV18R3v6qpknG4h_V6_IUoOBOSgRmuDOgdbnIrSldBTBWqlSuwiW4GSiQ6fK15gq4p0l5evmRIPXiEdNoalRdv457djTJxyhg/?imgmax=800" height="643" border="0" width="410" /></a></p> <p align="center"><u></u> </p> <p align="center"><u><span style="font-size:180%;color:#f79646;">Crocheted Pillows</span></u></p> <p align="center"><span style="font-size:100%;color:#f79646;"></span> </p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-OF8KyKjLRsA/TlwhOJjCEmI/AAAAAAAAA5E/vIYKlr1N8P4/s1600-h/glass%25252C%252520pillow%25252C%252520hydrangeas%252520014-2%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="glass, pillow, hydrangeas 014-2" alt="glass, pillow, hydrangeas 014-2" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU4EXtuIR-w7pQ0-0sTCWWBDatfYUJyJHuFPjDESc6XOJ7pfvPo4wn4MB83n5MWmse1hklSEquQve-H2ADwbqhqLrX_X72jXcJlj-dMTPONZmqzO1BkCu1wzTN_ARQDTJSjullR6F9mT8/?imgmax=800" height="324" border="0" width="460" /></a></p> <p align="left">I took these pictures last night, so I had to use the flash. If you can’t crochet or knit but still want the look of a knitted pillow I have a big secret for you. Go to goodwill, buy a cashmere sweater or any other sweater with a design you like (cable would be nice), make sure it is good and large, if you want a big pillow. Cut a square (or rectangle) from both sides and then stitch together to make pillow. Please make sure to wash it first! </p> <p align="left">If you want the pattern for this I chain stitched 32 across then I single crocheted in each stich. Row 2 SC into the back loop only, Row 3 SC in each stitch, repeat till you get the length. For the border I SC around, then two rows of DC, then two rows of SC.</p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-z-XO4RbmGOE/TlwhSokg7II/AAAAAAAAA5U/jmbd6sJJzwc/s1600-h/glass%25252C%252520pillow%25252C%252520hydrangeas%252520016-2%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="glass, pillow, hydrangeas 016-2" alt="glass, pillow, hydrangeas 016-2" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-8UrjRVcj5cc/TlwhTAgHLxI/AAAAAAAAA5Y/gZtytmL6rT8/glass%25252C%252520pillow%25252C%252520hydrangeas%252520016-2_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="331" border="0" width="470" /></a></p> <p>I was being really lazy with this pillow (unlike the knitted one at the top) and just wanted something quick and simple. So, I decided to make the back out of bleached canvas drop cloth. Boy o’ boy do I love some canvas drop cloth. I’m working on a lot more pillows make of it and hope to add them to this page in the near future. </p> <p> Anyways, I wanted this to be a cover, not an actual pillow. I needed to get my pillow in and out easily. All you have to do is measure the length of your pillow divide by half and then add 3 inches. Now cut your material to the width of you pillow, plus your new length from above. Do this twice. Now you pin your material to your front piece, overlapping the two back pieces you just cut. Sew. The pieces that overlap will be your opening. Is that clear as mud?</p> <p> </p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-We2HDousCJg/TlwhTyW81aI/AAAAAAAAA5c/4ZcKYL4Z_7s/s1600-h/glass%25252C%252520pillow%25252C%252520hydrangeas%252520026-2%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="glass, pillow, hydrangeas 026-2" alt="glass, pillow, hydrangeas 026-2" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-gIbSYWEPT9o/TlwhUuLDjkI/AAAAAAAAA5g/g_VmdnNCm3E/glass%25252C%252520pillow%25252C%252520hydrangeas%252520026-2_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="690" border="0" width="440" /></a></p> <p>Here is what it looks like on my bed. We have been offline and outta touch since Monday when our living room remodel started. I don’t have a final picture for you, because we are still moving furniture back in and unpacking, but I thought I’d fill you in on the progress.</p> <p>First, let’s look at the living room on the day we moved in, shall we.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-U21mCNO6TNQ/TielwuMh5sI/AAAAAAAAApY/57Jb0AAQ5v4/s1600-h/DSC_0030%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="DSC_0030" alt="DSC_0030" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-7Jpf0VbBEXQ/TielxQlezSI/AAAAAAAAApc/WJ5JrozLT34/DSC_0030_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="256" border="0" height="392" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPToh0w3N6idlWPquob3-QWi456TrWWPdjlaDsyMNAvc4XPjkD3a7g7FuqVTX-E9H6ikdIVuI-01UFbaGyyasYAAustIJsVwhtkK7zqeT1Yauuud98dqJLKxPMQx77PrOtA08EaDZHNfs/s1600-h/DSC_0031%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="DSC_0031" alt="DSC_0031" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-qVlzAT-Yupc/TielyiGebuI/AAAAAAAAApk/rdBoCGh3Z_0/DSC_0031_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="251" border="0" height="392" /></a></p> <p>The floors were in bad shape. The room all the way in the back in the left picture used to be a screened in porch. Apparently before we got there it had carpet and then that was ripped up to reveal unfinished wood. We sanded the whole floor as best we could you can read about that <a href="http://absorbedinart.blogspot.com/2011/04/restoring-heartpine-floors.html">here.</a> We then stained it Bombay Mahogany by Cabot and laid down two coats of poly. We have also closed in that closet, you can read about that <a href="http://absorbedinart.blogspot.com/2011/06/i-never-knew-ties-could-be-so-purty.html">here</a>. This week we hired a crew to come and patch the cracks in the wall and to texture our ceiling. It was such a big project because they had to hang new sheet rock over the old and then texture. Our living room is really long and it took 14 pieces of sheet rock. Needless to say, we are holding off on other big redo's, until we recuperate, or until our pocketbooks recuperate. ( Do people say pocketbooks anymore? If you don’t know what it is, ask your grandma). After the ceiling was textured we called in a favor to a great friend and neighbor who happens to be a professional painter! Boy did he help us out! We couldn’t have done it without you Dan! Here are some pictures of the progress.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-VMWOQK-mK_M/TielzEYqGsI/AAAAAAAAApo/cBYEQk-20Gs/s1600-h/living%252520room%252520001%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="living room 001" alt="living room 001" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihUvzpj_JZ7oQnDNJsVoQExgc5QRn0O7tLetG_ubp2HoS6ja_kFWNXva4rVTKjjIlE7EmoFdjGXBIX0Zg5OzejB3oTh76Cw6LUuQekgApoJlUuj28cL3mpES4DmieJhLMDD-nZJuWyPEc/?imgmax=800" width="518" border="0" height="366" /></a></p> <p>The walls after they had been patched. </p> <p> </p> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqO_vpWwpzd4_I5A0yx-lE43QXbYFof_Zci1k0AETKiNvBy4zgZQc87qCiNlA9LzuS5RLEXQS1EsO9ycwBl_LxSqEAS7Qnj-YrhopSS78HWYJ68ys2r6o0X7UF-4AATa7VHogKtIxqBfY/s1600-h/living%252520room%252520004%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="living room 004" alt="living room 004" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Hl3mSkHIWuk/Tiel0vJx94I/AAAAAAAAAp0/R9C4ssfhF88/living%252520room%252520004_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="331" border="0" height="517" /></a> <p>Ceiling with new drywall and texture. I thought the color would be more gray, but it actually looks more blue. We still love it!
